Making Landfall

The state hosted an information session March 12 on US Wind’s proposal to connect its offshore wind farm to the electrical grid with a land-based connection at 3R’s Beach, just south of the Indian River Inlet bridge.

Governor John Carney announced the start of formal negotiations between Delaware and US Wind regarding its two planned offshore wind projects, MarWin and Momentum Wind, with an outline of potential agreements for a lease of state land, for energy credits to reduce electricity costs, and for funding for workforce and environmental projects.

US Wind is developing plans to construct and operate two wind energy generating facilities in an offshore wind lease area designated by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula.

US Wind, Inc. plans to develop the approximately 80,000-acre U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lease Area (OCS-A 0490), its western boundary ~10.5 nautical miles east of the Ocean City, Maryland inlet.


A controlled process to access public roadway right-of-ways (ROWs) for transmission is needed. 
Offshore wind projects require access to electrical substations of high capacity to connect their renewable energy to the power grid.
